A Gallup poll released June 3, 2026, found that American support for same-sex marriage and broader LGBTQ+ acceptance has declined for the fourth consecutive year after peaking in 2022. Based on telephone interviews with just over 1,000 U.S. adults conducted in May 2026, the poll found that 65% of Americans now say same-sex marriages should be legally recognized, down from an all-time high of 71% in 2022. The share of Americans who consider gay or lesbian relationships “morally acceptable” fell to 62%, also down from 71% in 2022 and now at its lowest point in roughly a decade.

Gallup’s data shows the overall decline is concentrated almost entirely among Republican respondents. Republican support for same-sex marriage dropped from 55% in 2021–2022 to 37% in the 2026 survey, while the share of Republicans calling gay and lesbian relationships morally acceptable fell to 38%, roughly matching levels last recorded between 2005 and 2014. Support for legal gender transition specifically saw a comparable drop: just 5% of Republicans now call it morally acceptable, down from 22% five years ago. By contrast, Gallup found that support among Democrats has remained essentially stable, while independents saw a smaller decline. Gallup’s report noted that the widening gap between the two parties “suggests potential vulnerabilities” for the long-term durability of existing LGBTQ+ legal protections, including marriage equality, which the Supreme Court has thus far continued to leave undisturbed.
